5Shock 'n awe!  Nov 21, 2009
I just received my Kindle DX this morning. I'm amazed. I live in a rural part of a rural state, Vermont. I downloaded two books. They didn't take sixty seconds, they took about twenty. I'm sure the times vary, but I'm impresed, especially living in a place where cell phone coverage is spotty!

The page is so, so very easy on the eyes. The book selection is incredible. I know I'll be downloading books from the internet, too.

This little machine costs a bit, (it's my one big splurge for 2009), but it's worth it. I want to let other prospective buyers see my little machine, just have to find the place to post.

Take care! - Evan

1note to Amazon  Nov 21, 2009
I love my first generation kindle and was thinking about the Kindle DX for professional use and so checked out the reviews. But I have decided to not buy one now. It seems far too risky given the reports of fragility and bad product support. I am especially disappointed to hear of such poor customer service.

2something very important is missong  Nov 21, 2009
I do not know if the Kindle has an application to write notes on the side of the page. If you are gonna read for enjoyment Kindle is fine, but if you are doing some research or a deep reading it is important to highlight stuff and take some notes. Does this Kindle give you the chance to do that? if not, i think it is still very limited.

2Like it but Customer Service is terrible  Nov 21, 2009
I love my Kindle. I don't treat it harshly and rarely even take it out of the house. Less than three months into owning a brand new Kindle DX the battery has ceased holding a charge. I called customer service (which is in Costa Rica btw) and they can either charge me 20% to return it or exchange it with a refurb. ONLY 2 MONTHS into my ownership! This is obviously a problem that came with the Kindle DX and not anything that I have done. I could have went to the Kindle refurb store and saved $100 if I wanted a refurb, which I do not.

I'm EXTREMELY dissappointed in the Amazon Kindle customer service and think that if you are thinking of an E Reader, that you should seriously take into consideration the customer service and the warranty before you purchase.

5Kindle DX for visually handicapped individuals  Nov 21, 2009
I purchased the Kindle DX for my mother, who lost much of her vision a year ago. She had been a voracious reader until that time, but reading had become so tedious for her that she no longer read much of anything. She and I were thrilled that she was able to read books on the Kindle DX without using a magnifying glass; her glasses were sufficient. However, should her vision continue to deteriorate, she will be unable to use the Kindle DX, as the largest print it offers is the size of print in large print books. I hope that the designers take into consideration the large, elderly population, many of whom have vision problems, and decide to enable even larger print to be selected on future Kindles. (There's a huge market for it and a lot of money to be made.) Since mom can no longer drive, do her volunteer work, or go out unaccompanied, she has a lot of time on her hands. The Kindle DX has made the difference between mom sitting and stagnating, watching the idiot box (TV) and enriching her life through reading and keeping up with world events. It's a wonderful device that I would recommend to anyone.
