 Great Device May 15, 2008
Well I got my Kindle in the mail yesterday and have been using it for several hours already and I must say that I love it. I have had a few E-book reading devices over the last 10 years, starting with the Franklin E-Bookman, and then Palm devices and Pocket PC devices, as well as the Sony E-reader.
I have to say that the Amazon Kindle is so my favorite of any of those. I think that the main feature of this device that sets it above and beyond any of the others is the ability to shop for books and have them delivered wirelessly to the device, rather than having to download the E-book file to your computer and then having to transfer it.
I do have to disagree with a couple of reviews that I have read that say that it is easy to hit the next page buttons when you do not want to. I haven't really found this to be much of a problem, and the one complaint I saw of a black flicker when you change pages, well the Sony E-reader does that as well.
Just an overall wonderful device and in my opinion a winner.

This is what I have been waiting for, I read very fast so I end up with a lot of books I have no room for, But no one shares my interests to give them away. The kindle performs as advertised,My vision is not the best so the high contrast text is great and enlarging the text helps also.

An Important Thought May 15, 2008
From what I have seen and all that I have read about this product it sounds like something that I would dearly love to have. There are only two things keeping me from buying it: 1) the price, of course, and 2) I wish so badly that it had Microsoft Word on it so that I could edit my documents as well as read them. This second reason is the only thing really keeping me from calling the Kindle perfect.

I am so P****. The Sprint map and customer service both said I would have EVDO coverage...but I don't. I'm working on learning to download to the computer then onto my Kindle. (Like an ipod). When I went to a city that had coverage, it was a snap and GREAT! I subscribed to the NYT to get some culture and feel great that I am not crapping up the earth with paper. I just bought my first book. In any case this is a GREAT product.

Love this bibliomaniac's gadget! May 15, 2008
I am a book-a-week reader who hates being on the road without a good book, and who gets impatient when waiting for her latest book order to be delivered. I also love to read in bed, and feel guilty when my page-turning disturbs my husband. Kindle is the answer to these three challenges - and goes beyond!
No more scouring airport bookshops for a book that interests me. Now, I can just turn on the wireless on the Kindle, browse the Kindle store and download a bestseller or a literary classic in seconds.
Now, when I find a book I want to read, I order it, and can read it with moments, at less than the cost of a hard copy.
No more trying to turn pages with silent stealth; now I just gently click the little bar, and I'm moving along in my story without disturbing anyone. What's more, I can look up definitions for words that are obscure, or can shop without leaving my comfy nest.
No more duplicate books - more times than I would like to admit, I have re-purchased books I had already read, because the cover had different artwork and I didn't take the time to read the first few pages because I was in a hurry. Now, I can skim the list of books in my digital library and find out in moments whether I already own the book.
No more cramming books onto my bookshelf or deliberating over which book will be donated this year: now I can keep them all in my digital library.
The Kindle is tiny and light enough to conveniently fit into my small handbag.
The "experimental" features - particularly, the web browsing - are a great surprise. I can even check my hotmail from the Kindle (though I don't do so very often as it is slower than a regular computer or BlackBerry, and it sucks the life out of the battery). But I can do a quick check to see whether I need to close my Kindle and pop downstairs to deal with some e-mail.
All in all, I am happy with every penny I spent on the Kindle. If I had one "negative" it would be that I still can't read in bed without a little lamp. But it is a small plaint. The flip side is that I CAN read the Kindle in the backyard, in the bright light of Colorado sunshine.
This product probably isn't for you if you only read one book a year, but for those of us who are voracious readers, it is a godsend.
I am this close to becoming a Kindle-vangelist - and I have never raved about a technology product like this before.
